Satyanarayan Katha is one of the most loved ceremonies in Hindu homes. It is a puja of gratitude to Lord Vishnu in his form as the embodiment of truth.
When to perform it
It is traditionally done on Purnima, but families also hold it on birthdays, anniversaries, after a housewarming, a new job or whenever a wish is fulfilled.
The five chapters
The katha from the Skanda Purana has five adhyay, each telling the story of devotees — a poor Brahmin, a woodcutter, a merchant and a king — who were blessed when they kept their promise to the Lord.
सत्यं वद। धर्मं चर।
Preparing the prasad
The special prasad, sheera or sapaad bhakshya, is made from equal measures of semolina, ghee, sugar, milk and banana — symbolising balance.
Tips for a smooth katha
- Clean the puja area and set up a chowki facing east.
- Keep panchamrit, tulsi leaves and a banana stem ready.
- Invite family and neighbours — the katha is meant to be shared.
