About Griha Pravesh Puja

Griha Pravesh is the ceremonial first entry into a new home, performed on an auspicious muhurat. It includes Ganesh puja, Vastu Shanti, Navgraha shanti, kalash sthapana, havan and the traditional boiling of milk, purifying the space and inviting positive energy.

Samagri note: Your pandit shares a personalised samagri list at least three days before the ceremony. Most items are available at any puja store; on request, the pandit can bring the havan kund and special items for an additional, pre-agreed cost.

Griha Pravesh Puja — Step by Step

An outline of how the ceremony is conducted. Your pandit may adapt the order to your family tradition and regional practice.

  1. Arrival, setup & sankalp

    The pandit arrives about 30 minutes early, sets up the chowki facing east and takes the sankalp in the name and gotra of the yajman family, stating the purpose of the Griha Pravesh Puja.

  2. Muhurat consultation

    Before the day, the pandit studies the panchang and your family details to fix an auspicious date and time, and confirms the names, gotra and purpose for the sankalp.

  3. Ganesh puja & kalash sthapana

    Lord Ganesha is invoked first so that the ceremony proceeds without obstacles, with offerings of durva, flowers, akshat and sweets.

  4. Vastu Shanti & Navgraha puja

    Performed with the prescribed mantras and upacharas, with the pandit guiding the family through each action.

  5. Havan with ahutis

    Agni is consecrated in the havan kund and the family offers ghee and samagri with every mantra ending in “swaha”, concluding with the purnahuti.

  6. Doorway puja & milk boiling ritual

    Performed with the prescribed mantras and upacharas, with the pandit guiding the family through each action.

  7. Kshama prarthana & ashirvad

    The ceremony closes with a prayer seeking forgiveness for any unintentional error, followed by blessings for the family and guidance on what to do after the puja.

Tip: keep a clean chowki, a mat for the family to sit on and a steady water supply ready before the pandit arrives.

This ceremony is performed in person, as the rituals require the pandit's presence at the venue. Contact us if you are outside our service areas.

It covers the pandit's dakshina for the standard vidhi: Muhurat consultation, Ganesh puja & kalash sthapana, Vastu Shanti & Navgraha puja, Havan with ahutis, Doorway puja & milk boiling ritual. Samagri, travel outside city limits and additional pandits are quoted separately before you confirm.

Families usually arrange the samagri using the list the pandit shares before the ceremony. If you prefer, the pandit can bring the complete samagri kit for a pre-agreed amount.

Your pandit consults the panchang along with the birth details of the family head (or the individual concerned) to recommend auspicious dates and timings.
