A home is more than bricks and mortar — in Sanatan Dharma it is a sacred space where the family's dharma is lived every day. Griha Pravesh is the ceremony that marks the family's first formal entry into a new home, purifying it and inviting divine blessings.
Types of Griha Pravesh
The shastras describe three kinds: Apoorva (first entry into a newly built home), Sapoorva (re-entry after living elsewhere) and Dwandwah (entry after renovation or a calamity). The vidhi is broadly the same, with small differences in sankalp.
Choosing the Muhurat
Magh, Phalgun, Vaishakh and Jyeshtha are considered the most auspicious months. Nakshatras such as Rohini, Mrigashira, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra and Anuradha are preferred, while Chaturmas and Kharmas are generally avoided. Your pandit will match the muhurat to the family head's rashi.

Step-by-step Vidhi
1. Doorway puja
The threshold is decorated with rangoli, mango leaves and a toran. A kalash is placed at the entrance and the family enters with the right foot first.
2. Ganesh & Vastu puja
Lord Ganesha is worshipped first, followed by Vastu Purush puja and Navgraha shanti to harmonise the energies of the space.
3. Havan
A havan purifies the home with the fragrance of ghee and herbs. The purnahuti marks its completion.
4. Boiling milk
Milk is boiled in the new kitchen until it overflows — a symbol of abundance that will never run short.
