Pitru Dosh Puja — Step by Step

An outline of how the ceremony is conducted. Your pandit may adapt the order to your family tradition and regional practice.

  1. Arrival, setup & sankalp

The pandit arrives about 30 minutes early, sets up the chowki facing east and takes the sankalp in the name and gotra of the yajman family, stating the purpose of the Pitru Dosh Puja.

  2. Tithi & gotra-based sankalp

Performed with the prescribed mantras and upacharas, with the pandit guiding the family through each action.

  3. Tarpan with til and jal

Offerings for the ancestors and charity are made as prescribed, with guidance on the daan appropriate for your sankalp.

  4. Pind daan

Offerings for the ancestors and charity are made as prescribed, with guidance on the daan appropriate for your sankalp.

  5. Pitru Dosh nivaran path

The pandit recites the prescribed texts with correct swara and pauses to explain their meaning so the whole family can follow along.

  6. Daan & bhojan guidance

Offerings for the ancestors and charity are made as prescribed, with guidance on the daan appropriate for your sankalp.

  7. Kshama prarthana & ashirvad
