Devi Bhagwat Katha — Step by Step

An outline of how the ceremony is conducted. Your pandit may adapt the order to your family tradition and regional practice.

  1. Arrival, setup & sankalp

The pandit arrives about 30 minutes early, sets up the chowki facing east and takes the sankalp in the name and gotra of the yajman family, stating the purpose of the Devi Bhagwat Katha.

  2. Kalash & Devi sthapana

Sacred vessels and seats for the devtas are established on the chowki, inviting the deities who witness and bless the ritual.

  3. Daily moolpath & pravachan

The pandit recites the prescribed texts with correct swara and pauses to explain their meaning so the whole family can follow along.

  4. Devi puja & aarti

Aarti is performed with lamps and camphor, bhog is offered to the deity, and prasad is shared with family and guests.

  5. Havan

Agni is consecrated in the havan kund and the family offers ghee and samagri with every mantra ending in “swaha”, concluding with the purnahuti.

  6. Kanya pujan

Performed with the prescribed mantras and upacharas, with the pandit guiding the family through each action.

  7. Kshama prarthana & ashirvad

The ceremony closes with a prayer seeking forgiveness for any unintentional error, followed by blessings for the family and guidance on what to do after the puja.
